Email Mrs. Barnes

Welcome! My name is Mrs. Arlene Barnes and I am the 5th grade teacher. Although I’ve been teaching at CCS for four years, I am originally from Colorado. I was raised in the small town of Roggen, where I later married and raised five children. My husband Bill and I have been married for thirty-six years.
In 1999, I uprooted my family and moved to Nebraska so I could finish my education. I graduated from Chadron State College in 2002 and moved to Torrington, Wyoming where I taught for five years at Valley Christian School. Then following God’s lead I came to Scottsbluff to teach at Community Christian School.

The subjects we learn in fifth grade are Bible, Math, Spelling, Science, Heritage, Reading, and English. We also have music, keyboarding, PE and band which is optional.

In Bible we will be studying the events and people of the Old Testament and how their lives relate to what Jesus has done for us.
Math will challenge the students as they daily take speed drills to hone their accuracy. They will be accomplishing addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication using bigger numbers and then move on into learning fractions, algebra, decimals and geometry.

For spelling we will not only be learning words and doing worksheets but we will be using spelling in our everyday activities to help the students with their overall spelling skills.

Our science curriculum is hands-on with a lot of experiments that will also require us to research and to gain knowledge in many different ways. In Heritage we will cover early American history starting with the early automobile and the airplanes and wrapping up the year discussing World War I and homes, traditions and celebrations of American families.

In reading we will explore different reading strategies and learn about a variety of genres. They will be practicing comprehension strategies. I am also encouraging reading for pleasure and hoping the students will gain the ability to place themselves in the story and learn to experience many adventures in life.

The English curriculum will not only teach the students how to properly use grammar, but it will also teach them how to write many different types of papers.

Fifth grade is an exciting time in a child's life where students are no longer considered a small child. However; along with the added privileges they gain they also take on a whole new set of responsibilities. To help keep my students accountable I will teach them organizational skills which will not only help prepare them for middle school, but will also help them develop a better relationship with the Lord.
Please pray for us as we begin this year of adventure that God has mapped out for us.
